The drawings of Leonardo da Vinci have inspired engineers and artists for centuries with their imaginativeness, clarity and beauty.

Like a few ancient authors (Hero of Alexandria, Archimedes, Vitruvius, Frontinus, and Pliny the Elder), Leonardo had a passion for engineering. These authors are among the first technical writers in history, but none equaled Leonardo's gift for illustrating engineering inventions.
